This site is as ancient as the church at St. George (4th century). Although it has been rebuilt several times, it is the oldest Orthodox church in Sofia and gave this city its name during the 2nd Bulgarian Empire in 1376 AD. Originally, the Thracians in 800 BC called the city "Serdica." Sofia is about the same size as greater Salt Lake City, UT (over 1.2 million). It served as the main capital in Bulgaria under the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Bulgars and Turks. Outside the church was the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame, flag and stone lion as the nation's greatest symbols.
