The Alexander Nevski Church is a massive, awesome symbol of Bulgaria's gratitude for Russia's sacrifice in liberating Bulgaria from the Turks in the Russo-Turkish War (1877-78). Built in the Byzantine style favored by Russia at that time, this honors one of Russia's greatest warrior-monks (12th century), who inspired the soldiers in the 1878 liberation. The basement level was a spacious crypt ideally suited to display hundreds of religious paintings (icons) taken from churches all over Bulgaria.
