Archaeological Museum

Built in 1496 as a mosque, since 1899 it has housed many excavated treasures from Thracian, Greek, Roman and Byzantine periods. These included icons, gold images, coin hordes, statue heads, pots and the original 4th century St. Sofia mosaic floor. Also there was the famous Madara Horseman (not shown) -- a huge 8th century rock carving of a mounted Bulgar and his dog from the First Bulgarian Empire.
