Beyond an underpass filled with shops was an immense monument to the Soviet Army. A soviet figure was thrusting an AK-47 skyward, while being welcomed by oppressed workers and celebrating masses. During its 50-year rule of Bulgaria, the USSR worried less about Bulgaria than its other satellites. This was because of both the deep historical ties between the two countries and the strong internal controls imposed by the Bulgarian dictator, Tudor Zhivkov. He was deposed after the Iron Curtain fell in 1989.
