Son of Ferdinand (Kingdom of Independent Bulgaria after 1908), King Boris III ruled during World War II. He saved some 50,000 Jews from death by the Nazis. Communists in 1925 blew up the great St. Nedelya Cathedral and killed 120 people trying to assassinate Boris there. But his escape was attributed to the "holy bones" of a medieval king still lying in a glass case and wrapped in his velvet robe.
