Bulgarian Liberation Heroes

Vasil Levski (the tall monument) was Bulgaria's greatest hero. Until he was killed by the Turks in 1873, he had organized a national resistance movement against the Ottoman Empire that was finally concluded in 1878.

Ivan Vasov, Bulgaria's most beloved author of Under the Yoke -- who wrote about Bulgaria's crusade against the Turks -- was honored in another park.  Both heroes were buried in Sofia.   Marilyn read Under the Yoke in English, and also some Bulgarian poems and short stories provided to her by a UNWE law student.
