Downtown Sofia

Downtown Sofia is highly cultured, with many diverse architectural styles. It is about the same size as greater Salt Lake City (just over 1 million). The main sights are all in easy walking distance. The best view was from high up in the Radisson Hotel. From there, we saw Alexander II on his horse pointing to the distant Alexander Nevski Church, with the large white Parliament bldg. in between.

Note the "yellow-brick roads," with unique gold-colored fired pavers from Budapest, Hungary. There, we saw a street rally for Sophia Mayor Boyko Borisoff, favored to be the next Prime Minister in 2009.

This was not the Angel Moroni -- but the symbol of Sophia (meaning "wisdom" in Greek). It was holding an owl in one hand and a wreath of victory in the other -- representing wisdom and fate. She was mounted on a tall monument where a huge statue of Lenin once stood. Times have changed.
