CILS Instruction, 19-23 Oct.

All of the Center for International Legal Studies orientation meetings were held in the Meierhoff Annex (Parker Hall), for all couples teaching in Eastern European law schools.  It was just thru the wall from our bedroom, but at the opposite end of level 2. The Vilar Center on the ground floor had 6 computers with easy internet & printing access. All instructors were excellent -- but Gene Dye  was our favorite.  (He is in the first shot below and right on the 2nd shot, with his delightful Austrian wife Joy).  He had graduated from my own University of Chicago Law School (class of 1967).

Also in the 2nd shot above was Dennis Campbell -- a true visionary and bon vivant. He founded CILS and was a lawyer and professor in both Austria and the U.S. Dennis started recruiting senior U.S. lawyers in 2005, when he hired Carola Wojak. Their first plan was to recruit U.S. attorneys to work in European law firms. This evolved into teaching at law schools, most of them from the former Soviet bloc. About 50 lawyers went to eastern Europe in 2006 (their first year), and all went at their own expense. Now over 60 law schools had signed up to host more than 100 lawyers as guest instructors. Of those, 40% will be repeaters and 60% will be new instructors. It was an ideal mix of cultures and legal systems -- U.S. or English Common Law in a European Civil Law setting. If our rich experience was any indication, this program will continue to expand.
